Media Advisory: Correction-Canadian Soldiers Training for Mission to Afghanistan

CFB WAINWRIGHT, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 4, 2008) - Approximately 2,500 soldiers from 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (2 CMBG) and Reservists from Southern Ontario and across Canada have moved to CFB Wainwright to conduct pre-deployment training for their upcoming mission to Afghanistan.

The soldiers (who will be part of the next Battle Group going to Kandahar, Afghanistan in August) will conduct exercises at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre located at CFB Wainwright until May 23. The exercises will include such mission specific training as patrolling, dealing with locals, security, live-fire, threats, etc.

After the training in Wainwright, the soldiers will return to CFB Petawawa and continue their final preparations before leaving in August.

The Battle Group will replace the soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2 PPCLI) Battle Group who are currently serving in Afghanistan as part of Task Force Afghanistan, which is Canada's commitment to the international campaign against terrorism.

Note to the Editor/News Director:

Corrections were made to the date of the media day, which is now to be held on 6 May 2008 and not 5 May. Additionally 2,500 soldiers are taking part in the training not 1,600 as stated in the original media advisory, and 2 CMBG will be replacing 2 PPCLI and not soldiers from CFB Valcartier.

Media are invited to CFB Wainwright to view this training on 6 May 2008. However, space is very limited, so prior notification is required. For details please contact Capt St. Denis. (780) 842-1363 extension 5971.
