Media Advisory: Correctional Investigator Releases Initial Assessment of the Correctional Service of Canada's Response to Deaths in Custody

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 10, 2009) - The Correctional Investigator of Canada, Mr. Howard Sapers, will respond to the Service's actions following the release of reports by his office on deaths in custody, including the death of Ashley Smith, as well as the recommendations of other reports and investigations arising from the same incidents. The reports include:

- Deaths in Custody Study, Report on 82 deaths of prisoners while in custody of the Correctional Service from 2001 - 05 (Office of the Correctional Investigator), February 2007

- Board of Investigation into the Death of an Inmate at Grand Valley Institution for Women on October 19, 2007 (Correctional Service of Canada), February 2008

- A Preventable Death: A Report into the Death of Ashley Smith (Office of the Correctional Investigator), June 2008.
