Media Advisory: CPAs Holding Free Tax Clinic at Yonge and Bloor April 24

Head office clinic just one of many across GTA and Province

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 22, 2014) - For the 46th year, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario) is holding Free CPA Tax Clinics for individuals with low-incomes. On Thursday, April 24, volunteer Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs) and students will be on hand to help people who have made appointments have their taxes done free of charge at the CPA Ontario office at Yonge and Bloor streets in Toronto.

In 1969, the profession first launched what was then known as the Free CA Tax Clinics as a pilot project in Toronto involving 500 taxpayers. Today, the Free CPA Tax Clinics help thousands of individuals prepare their tax returns so they can receive much-needed tax credits and refunds. Since the program was initiated, many Ontarians have benefited from the volunteered tax-preparation time of CPAs.

Today, the program is a province-wide partnership between over 200 community service groups that host the clinics and over 1,750 volunteer CPAs who complete the returns free of charge. Participating community service agencies include food banks, charities, hospitals, senior centres and homes, community centres, social service agencies and libraries. To help those agencies carry out their valuable day-to-day work, as part of the Free CPA Tax Clinics Program, CPA Ontario also offers additional support by providing them with a donation based on the number of tax returns prepared.

To qualify for this free tax return assistance, individuals must have total household income less than $30,000 with dependents or less than $20,000 without dependents. Also, there should be no property income, business income and no terminal returns. Appointments for the April 24 clinic can be booked by calling 416-962-1841 ext. 0.

Reporters are invited to attend this Free CPA Tax Clinic.
