Media Advisory: CUPE-Many in Fort Frances with developmental disabilities without services

Better provincial funding needed to get individuals off waitlists for supports

FORT FRANCES, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 19, 2011) - Waitlists for services and supports for adults with a developmental disability are at an all-time high in Fort Frances and across the province, and must be addressed by the provincial government before more families lose hope, say area advocates for improved supports. The lack of support or the lack of access to appropriate supports puts an incredible strain on families. The reality is many individuals will be waiting a very long time to access the supports that meet their needs.

Currently, there are 23,000 people with a developmental disability on waitlists for services across Ontario.

A media conference will be held on Wednesday, April 20 (11:00 a.m.) at Community Living Fort Frances and District, 340 Scott Street, to give an overview of the challenges faced by families in accessing services locally.

"Our message to the province is a simple one: If you believe that every Ontarian has a right to be an active participant in our communities, then you have to provide the necessary funding to stabilize existing services while increasing access to supports to the most vulnerable to let that happen," says Alanna J. Barr, Community Living Fort Frances and District executive director. Community Living Fort Frances and District provides services and supports to families across northwestern Ontario including Fort Frances, west to Rainy River, north to Nestor Falls, and east to Lac La Croix.

Barr will be joined at Wednesday's media conference by Allan Dustak, a direct support worker with the agency and family advocates.
