Media Advisory: CUPE Ontario-April 6 Rally at University of Guelph Launches Province-Wide Campaign Against Provincial Underfunding

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 3, 2009) - The Ontario Division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE Ontario) will be launching their campaign against provincial underfunding of Ontario universities at a demonstration and rally on the campus of the University of Guelph on Monday, April 6 at noon at the University Centre, 50 Stone Rd. East, Guelph.

"Of all ten provinces, Ontario comes last when it comes to per-student funding," said Janice Folk-Dawson, chair of CUPE's Ontario University Workers Coordinating Committee (OUWCC). "So it's no surprise for university students, their families and public-sector workers that Ontario's post secondary education system is underfunded."

"As result of the chronic underfunding of Ontario universities the OUWCC will launch a province-wide campaign to draw attention to the issues surrounding underfunding and privatization on Ontario campuses," said Folk-Dawson. "We intend to pressure the McGuinty government to properly fund the sector."

Despite the added dollar amounts for universities announced in last week's budget, Alastair Summerlee, the president of the University of Guelph, has refused to reconsider cuts he recently announced.
