Media Advisory-CUPE Ontario: Sid Ryan and Andrea Horwath to Attend Windsor Day of Mourning Ceremonies

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 28, 2009) - Sid Ryan, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario, and Andrea Horwath, Leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP), will be attending today's Day of Mourning ceremonies at Windsor's Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

April 28 is the Day of Mourning for workers who have been killed or injured on the job. It is a day to mourn and to acknowledge that each worker's death is not only a tragedy for families; it is a tragedy for co-workers and for all of society. Today is the day when workers stand in solidarity in over 100 countries around the world to share a collective sense of loss.

Three workers die from their work every day in Canada. At least 12 Canadian workers die from occupational disease every day as well. Most of their deaths are unrecognized by workers' compensation systems across Canada.
