Media Advisory-CUPE Ontario: This Province Needs a Real Poverty Reduction Act, With Goals and Accountability

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 21, 2009) - Fred Hahn, Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario will be presenting CUPE Ontario's submission to the Standing Committee on Social Policy on Bill 152, An Act to Reduce Poverty, 2009.

Later today, Hahn will speak to the Poverty Reduction Act both from the perspective of meeting the needs of people living in poverty and from the perspective of CUPE members, some of whom are the working poor. CUPE Ontario has been calling on the provincial government to make poverty reduction a cornerstone of social and economic policy.

"According to a recent report, an additional 474,368 Ontarians will be driven into poverty in the next two years, says Hahn. CUPE Ontario urges the Government to take real action now to reduce these numbers as much as possible. Poverty reduction is the best possible strategy for economic recovery."

CUPE contends that Bill 152 must make direct and specific reference in the Preamble to a "poverty-free" Ontario as the goal of the Act. Further, CUPE Ontario asks that the Bill recognize that the provision of publicly-funded and affordable child care, income support, labour market participation and affordable housing strategies be part of poverty reduction strategies for Ontario.
