Investing in community services good way to stimulate and improve economy

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 25, 2009) - Public investment in social services as well as roads, water systems and hospitals is a good way to stimulate the economy, says Sid Ryan, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario.

Ryan will be available at Queen's Park to comment on the provincial budget on Thursday, March 26.

WHO: Sid Ryan, President, CUPE Ontario

WHAT: Reaction to 2009 provincial budget

WHERE: Queen's Park

WHEN: Thursday, March 26, 4:00 PM

Will the budget balance "hard" infrastructure with investment in social services, like much-needed child care spaces that allow parents to work, re-train or return to school? Investments must be gender-balanced, since the "hard" infrastructure sectors are heavily male dominated, the budget must balance with stimulus spending in female dominated sectors as well, including social services, health care and education.

When the economy goes down, the need for community-based social services goes up. Cutting funding to municipalities, universities, schools and hospitals will hurt many medium and smaller communities further. Will this budget help or hinder communities across the province?
