Media Advisory: CUPE to hold LPN conference in Truro, focused on 'Scope of Practice'

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - June 19, 2014) - Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in CUPE will gather in Truro this weekend, June 20 - 22 at the Holiday Inn, for a conference under the theme, "I can do that. I'm an LPN!"

LPNs from acute care, long term care and community care will explore the issue of 'scope of practice', which determines which duties and practices an LPN can carry out in their respective workplaces.

On Saturday morning at 10:30, they will hear a panel discussion on LPN Scope of Practice vs. Scope of Employment, featuring:

  • Doug Bungay, Director of Professional Policy, College of LPN's of Nova Scotia

  • Leanne McIntyre, Director of Care, Shoreham Village Senior Citizens' Home

  • Mira Lewis, CUPE National Staff, Staff Advisor to Saskatchewan LPN Committee

  • Carl Crouse, CUPE National Staff, Staff Coordinator, Community Services Nova Scotia

The College of LPNs of Nova Scotia describes Licensed Practical Nurses as self-regulated professionals. To practice as an LPN in Nova Scotia, an individual must be a graduate of an approved practical nurse diploma program (or equivalent) and have successfully completed the Canadian Practical Nurses Registration Examination.
