Media Advisory: CUPE to Urge DNSSAB to Keep Ambulance Service Public

Union to hold info-picket outside DNSSAB board meeting tomorrow

NORTH BAY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 20, 2009) - The union representing West Nipissing paramedics, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will hold an information picket outside Tuesday's board meeting of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB).

The DNSSAB is discussing, among other things, whether to privatize ambulance service in West Nipissing. Last week, West Nipissing Town Council voted to keep ambulance service local and to maintain service levels.

WHAT: DNSSAB info-picket

WHERE: Outside North Bay City Hall, 200 McIntyre Street East, North Bay

WHEN: Tuesday, July 21, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Privatizing emergency medical services (EMS) in West Nipissing will divert already scarce resources into private profits and undermine community safety, says CUPE. CUPE members will info-picket outside the DNSSAB meeting as part of its campaign to keep ambulance service public.

West Nipissing, with a population of 13,000, only receives 20 hours of EMS coverage daily. Introducing a profit motive will put even more pressure on resources and could lead to less service, the union says.
