Media Advisory: Disaster Drill at BCIT This Wednesday

Institute to conduct annual mock disaster scenario on Wednesday, June 11

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 9, 2008) -

Members of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and Emergency Response Teams (ERT) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology will be participating in a full-scale mock disaster exercise at the main Burnaby Campus. This is a full-functional exercise run in real-time, complete with "mock" deaths, injuries, structural damage and more, with real-time responses. This year's scenario is an earthquake; the scenario has been planned for a number of months, prior to the major earthquake in China, however the event in China has served as a reminder that the Vancouver region is vulnerable as well.

While the drill takes place at the Burnaby Campus, staff members from BCIT's satellite campuses will also be participating. Outside observers from various local and provincial agencies will be on hand to evaluate BCIT's response.

Should BCIT need to respond to a real emergency on June 11, the exercise will be stopped immediately.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

The scenario will begin at approximately 8:30am and continue until approximately noon.

BCIT's Burnaby Campus, 3700 Willingdon Ave, Burnaby

During the exercise, photo opportunities, including staged injuries, will be available at the Burnaby Campus. Members of BCIT's Emergency Response Team will be available for interviews. Please note, exercise participants will be responding to the situation in real-time, and may not be immediately available to answer questions, as they focus on the drill.

Members of the media are invited to observe the scenario unfold at the Burnaby campus. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Allison Markin at 604-432-8773, allison_markin@bcit.ca, or on June 11, please report to the Emergency Operations Centre at Safety and Security, building SW1 at the Burnaby campus. Please bring identification, such as a business card. Media are also invited to participate by role-playing during the scenario, participating in media briefings or other activities that could take place during a real emergency. Please note, some media relations staff may not know the exact course of the scenario so that they may respond as they would in a real situation.

Pay parking is available in the visitor`s lots near building SW1. A limited number of media parking passes will be available.

A campus map, including parking locations, is available online at: bcit.ca/about/burnaby.shtml.
