Media Advisory/DND: Military Training on Six Day Exercise at Connaught Ranges

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 10, 2007) - Connaught Ranges and Primary Training Centre (CRPTC) near Shirley's Bay in Kanata has a long history as a training establishment and rifle range complex, but this summer there will be over seven hundred entry level soldiers being trained at Connaught for the Reserve Force. Every year the Ceremonial Guard trains soldiers at Connaught (and other locations) for work on Parliament Hill, but this is the first time in many years that so many soldiers have been trained at the facility, normally used for small arms ranges and summer cadet camps.

The topics the soldiers will learn focus on physical fitness, weapons handling, first aid, and general military knowledge initially, and will eventually develop in them skills to live and fight as part of a team in both urban and austere environments.

The final test of skills for the Soldier Qualification (SQ) will be a six day Field Training Exercise starting on 12 August. Media are invited to visit training on 14 August during which the soldiers will be digging and defending a defensive system of trenches with wire barriers and early warning device emplacements. Throughout the evening the soldiers will be probed by enemy forces that will test the soldiers' drills. There will be blank ammunition and pyrotechnics (artillery simulators) used during portions of this training. Media visiting during the day will have the opportunity to tour the defensive position, meet with soldiers, and get an impression of the life of a soldier in the field.
