Media Advisory: Donald Lafleur Available to Media at Charlottetown's Labour Day Picnic

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 29, 2014) - Donald Lafleur, the new Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress, will be in Charlottetown on Monday, September 1, for the Labour Day BBQ organized by the Prince Edward Island Federation of Labour.

Lafleur will be available to media at the BBQ, in Joe Ghiz Memorial Park from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, to talk about the advantages of having a union at work.

Canadian workers have celebrated their achievements on this day since it was declared a national holiday in 1894. The focus this year is on how unions stand up for fairness on behalf of their members and how that benefits all Canadians. CLC researchers have found that on average unionized workers in and around Charlottetown earn $10.64 an hour more than non-union employees, a difference that puts an extra $4.5 million into the local economy every week!

Lafleur says that many of the things first won by unions are enjoyed by all workers today, including fair wages, overtime pay, pensions, workplace safety standards, parental leave, vacation pay and protection from discrimination and harassment.
