Media advisory: Ecole elementaire et secondaire publique L'Equinoxe Marks National Aboriginal Day With the Official Launch of Their Very First Cedar Bark Canoe

PEMBROKE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 20, 2012) - As part of the aboriginal education program at the Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario (CEPEO), and in celebration of National Aboriginal Day, the CEPEO is pleased to invite the media to the official launch of the very first bark canoe built at Pembroke's École élémentaire et secondaire publique l'Équinoxe on Wednesday, June 20 at 9:15 a.m.

Since February, the students at L'Équinoxe have been working on building a cedar bark canoe, a first for them and a first for Ontario's French-language schools. Under the guidance of Christian Pilon, a genuine voyageur and participant in the first season of the TV series Destination Nor'Ouest, which aired on TFO and TVA in 2006, ten students from the school were able to experience all the steps involved in building a canoe using the same methods and resources as our ancestors.

The project involved all the school's students, who contributed in various ways to building the canoe during their lunch hour and breaks.

In the ceremony on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at 9:15 a.m., students and staff members will portage from the school to Riverside Park. Once in the park, the team will officially launch the canoe.
