MEDIA ADVISORY: Education Sector Unions Launch Legal Challenge to Bill 115

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 10, 2012) -

Attention: Assignment Editors, Education Reporters

On the one month anniversary of the Ontario government's passage of Bill 115, a joint media conference will be held tomorrow afternoon in Toronto with:

  • Ken Coran, President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF)
  • Sam Hammond, President of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO)
  • Fred Hahn, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario
  • Smokey Thomas, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU)
Date: Thursday, October 11, 2012
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: Outside Ontario Superior Court of Justice
361 University Avenue, (south east corner at Armoury St.)

Bill 115 strips teachers, education workers, support staff and educational professionals of the right to bargain collectively. It sets a dangerous precedent for similar legislation that is already being proposed for the broader public sector.

All four presidents will be on hand and available for interviews to outline actions being taken to defend the rights of working Ontarians.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
