Media Advisory: Employment Statistics/CLC President, Chief Economist Available for Comment

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 6, 2009) - When Statistics Canada releases its monthly Labour Force Survey on Friday, August 7, Canadian Labour Congress Chief Economist Andrew Jackson will be available by telephone to the media to comment on the numbers and their significance.

CLC President Ken Georgetti will be available for comment from Vancouver.

There were 1.59 million unemployed men and women in Canada as of June 2009, and 440,000 of them have lost their jobs since October 2008. The unemployment rate in June rose to 8.6% - the highest in 11 years.

A number of Canada's premiers and territorial leaders have called for EI reform but the Harper government has resisted making significant changes.
