Media Advisory: Employment Statistics-CLC President, Labour Market Economist Available for Comment

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 4, 2009) - Shortly after Statistics Canada releases its monthly Labour Force Survey on Friday, June 5, Canadian Labour Congress Senior Economist Sylvain Schetagne will be available by telephone to the media. He is a specialist regarding the Canadian labour market.

CLC President Ken Georgetti will be available for comment from Vancouver.

There were 1.46 million unemployed men and women in Canada as of April 2009, and almost 350,000 of them have lost their jobs since October 2008. As of March 2009, only 46.8 % of those who are unemployed are actually receiving Employment Insurance benefits. That means that 53.2% are not receiving benefits.

There is a growing consensus that the Employment Insurance system is broken and must be fixed. The Prime Minister and his cabinet seem to be the only ones prepared to allow unemployed Canadians to fend for themselves.
