Media Advisory: First World War Veteran is Forever a Canadian

SPOKANE, WASHINGTON--(Marketwire - May 12, 2008) - Media are invited to attend the Canadian citizenship ceremony for Mr. John Babcock at his residence in Spokane, Washington. Mr. Babcock, the last known soldier to have served Canada in the First World War became a U.S. citizen in 1946 and automatically lost his status as a British subject. The Canadian Citizenship Act, which legally established Canadian citizenship, only came into force in 1947. The oath will be administered by an official from Citizenship and Immigration Canada in the presence of Mr. Babcock's family and the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs.
