Media Advisory: Former Foreign Affairs Minister David Emerson and Fraser Institute Executive Director Mark Mullins to Speak on Building Canada's Trade Relationship With China

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 20, 2009) - Although media coverage of Canada's relations and trade with China often gives the impression the two nations are major trading partners, Canadian trade with China actually represents just a miniscule portion of Canada's overall international trade and the country has a long way to go to fully take advantage of the opportunities presented by one of the world's fastest growing markets.

Join David Emerson, P.C., former minister of international relations and foreign affairs, and Mark Mullins, the Fraser Institute's executive director, on Tuesday, April 21, for a discussion on how Canada can build on its trade relationship with China. They will also discuss the findings of the recently released Fraser Institute study, Canada's Economic Relations with China.

Emerson was appointed the Executive Chair and CEO of the British Columbia Transmission Corporation in November 2008. Prior to his appointment with BCTC, Emerson held senior cabinet positions in the Government of Canada and senior positions in the Government of British Columbia. He served as president and CEO of Canfor Corporation and the first president and CEO of the Vancouver International Airport Authority. He currently serves as senior advisor for the law firm of Farris, Vaughn, Wills and Murphy LLP and chairs the Premier's Economic Advisory Council.

Prior to joining the Institute in 2003, Mullins served as a chief economist on Bay Street for almost a decade. He has a Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics and specialized in studying the 1987 stock market crash, central bank policy and the history of financial crises from the 17th century on to today.

Interested media are invited to attend.
