MEDIA ADVISORY: French-Language Education Launches Major Initiative in Support of Ontario's French Schools

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 30, 2009) -

ATTN - EDUCATION REPORTERS/ASSIGNMENT DESKS

WHAT:

Ontario's French- language education system unveils a groundbreaking, province-wide campaign to promote the province's French-language schools and bilingual colleges and universities. Funding from Heritage Canada has made this initiative possible. The launch will be shared live via webcast to Francophone communities in Timmins, Sudbury and Toronto.(i)

WHY:

- Ontario is home to the largest Francophone population outside of Quebec, yet many of those entitled to French-language education are unaware of their constitutional right to have their children educated in one of Ontario's more than 400 publicly funded French-language schools.

- French-language Education (FLE) is a public school system that spans from junior kindergarten to high school. The French-language system also includes twelve post-secondary establishments across Ontario. All French-language School Boards offer full day junior and senior kindergarden to four and five year old children, free of charge.

- Student enrolled in French-language schools have the opportunity to become fully bilingual. Not only do they learn in French in a French cultural setting, but they also follow the English curriculum delivered in English schools in Ontario.

- FLE's partnership with French-language services in the community enhances the student's learning experience and contributes to the vibrant and dynamic cultural make-up of our province and country.

- Recruiting and retaining students in FLE programs is crucial to the preservation and growth of Francophone culture in Ontario.
