Media Advisory: General R.J. Hillier, Chief of Defence Staff, to Receive DareArts Cultural Leadership Award

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 19, 2007) -

The Media are invited to the April 26th event and the Media Availability:

On Thursday, April 26th General Rick Hillier will be honoured by DareArts in Toronto and present six DareArts urban teen graduates with scholarships for being leaders in their own communities. DareArts is honouring General Hillier for his commitment to:

- Preventing war

- Keeping the Peace

- Healing the wounds of war by allowing Canadian soldiers to work directly with and support the children who are the first victims of war in Bosnia and now in Afghanistan.

- Healing the wounds of "at risk children" in Canada, particularly aboriginal teenagers in Ontario's northern aboriginal communities

- Utilizing art, music and dance to help restore a full life to children wounded by war and social neglect.

Since l998, General Hillier has worked with DareArts and its European partner, the Centipede Children For Peace Movement, putting the full weight of his experience and prestige at the organization's disposal. DareArts children have raised money by selling their original artwork cards which helped Canadian and other NATO Peacekeepers to rebuild schools in Bosnia and purchase a Bigfoot landmine remover. The children sang in front of their bombed out school their international theme song, Never Be Alone. Later that year, Canadian DareArts children joined these children who were honoured to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize's 100th anniversary in Norway.

With General Hillier's support, DareArts has continued to work with Canadian troops to help children in Afghanistan and here at home. DareArts has sent over 2,000 original cards to our soldiers, to be personally handed to children in Afghanistan's villages and schools. These cards have messages in Farsi that say "Love from Canadian children".

Journalists are welcome to cover the DareArts Leadership Awards dinner 7:30 p.m. which will include speeches by General Hillier and the DareArts teen graduates, as well as speak with General Hillier and the teens at a Media Availability at 5 p.m., April 26th, at the Royal Ontario Museum (Glass Room).

DareArts is a Canadian charity that empowers children through arts education.
