Dr. Carolyn Lukensmeyer presents "People's Voices: Essentials for a Healthy Democracy" Attention: Assignment Editor, Education Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ON--(CCNMatthews - June 10, 2005) - Media Advisory

Getting the Public into Public Policy

The University of Toronto's Joint Centre for Bioethics and the U of T/University Health Network Centre for Global eHealth Innovation welcome Dr. Carolyn Lukensmeyer, an advocate for the development of new democratic practices that strengthen citizen involvement in policy-making. With the landscape of Canadian health-care currently evolving, public opinion of these changes and ways to voice that opinion are necessary in the health care debate, particularly in the areas of bioethics and ehealth, two quickly evolving areas of the health system.

Dr. Lukensmeyer's seminar marks the official launch of the "Public Engagement Project," led by Dr. Alex Jadad, director of the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, and Dr. Peter Singer, director of U of T's Joint Centre for Bioethics. With funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Ontario Innovation Trust, Princess Margaret Hospital (Radiation Medicine Program and Breast Cancer Survivorship Program) and U of T, the project will see new facilities for town hall meetings, multimedia production, broadcasting and other communication methods.
