Media Advisory: Good Jobs for All Coalition to Rally to Fix EI

Thousands of Families Suffer Unemployment and Harper Government's Inaction

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 3, 2009) - This Thursday, the Good Jobs for All Coalition - an alliance of more than 35 community, labour and student groups representing people throughout the Greater Toronto Area - will rally outside of an Employment Insurance (EI) office in Toronto.

EVENT: Good Jobs for All Coalition's Rally for EI Repair

DATE: Thursday, March 5, 2009

TIME: 12:00 p.m. ET

LOCATION: Service Canada Centre, Arthur Meighen Building
25 St. Clair Avenue East, Toronto, ON
(south side, between Alvin and Ferndale Avenues)

Speakers at the rally are:

Unemployed workers who are experiencing the problems created by the Harper government's inaction on EI policy first-hand;

Winnie Ng, Co-chair of the Good Jobs for All Coalition and Coordinator of the Progressive Moulded Products Workers' Action Centre;

Marie Clarke Walker, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC);

Ken Lewenza, President of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW); and

A representative of the government employees, who deals with the overwhelming number of EI applications being filed by unemployed workers.

In January, community members and labour representatives sent a pre-budget message to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty about the urgent need to repair the EI program. Since then, the Harper government has done nothing to ensure that more of the unemployed are getting the Employment Insurance benefits they paid for.

In November 2008, the Coalition's Good Jobs Summit was attended by a diverse group of more than 1,000 workers, students, environmentalists, social justice advocates, youth, city councillors, MPPs, MPs and community members from the GTA.
