Media Advisory: Governor General to Attend Installation Ceremony of McGill University's New Principal and Vice-Chancellor

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 1, 2013) - His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will attend the installation of Professor Suzanne Fortier as the 17th principal and 13th vice-chancellor of McGill University, on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Redpath Hall (3461 McTavish Street, Montréal).

The academic procession will start at 9:40 a.m., in front of McGill's Arts Building (853 Sherbrooke Street West). Participants and officials will be led from the Arts Building to Redpath Hall by the McGill University piper. The installation ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.

As the visitor of McGill University, His Excellency will be responsible for entrusting the charter and seal of the University to Professor Fortier's keeping.

About the role of The Visitor of McGill University:

A special connection with the office of the Governor General of Canada was established by the Royal Charter granted to McGill University by Queen Victoria, on July 6, 1852. When a governor general assumes office, that person becomes the official Visitor of McGill.

The function of a Visitor is to exercise a right or duty of supervision in connection with an educational institution, whereby the Visitor represents the founder and/or the public or Crown interest in the institution.
