Media Advisory: Governor General of Canada Welcomes His Excellency Sebastian Pinera, President of the Republic of Chile

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 28, 2013) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston, will welcome His Excellency Sebastián Piñera, President of the Republic of Chile, and his spouse, Mrs. Cecilia Morel, to Rideau Hall, on May 30 and 31, 2013, on the occasion of their State visit to Canada.

3:15 p.m. - Official Welcoming Ceremony
An official welcoming ceremony, with military honours, will be held at Rideau Hall. The President of the Republic of Chile will conduct an inspection of a guard of honour. The Governor General and the President will then offer remarks.

3:45 p.m. - Meeting between the Governor General and the President of the Republic of Chile

4:15 p.m. - Ceremonial Tree Planting
The President and his spouse will plant a tree on the grounds of Rideau Hall to commemorate their State visit to Canada. The tree will be a red maple (Acer rubrum), chosen to symbolize the close links between Canada and Chile.

7 p.m. - State Dinner
In honour of the President's visit to Canada, Their Excellencies will host a State dinner at Rideau Hall.

8:30 a.m. - Discussion on Education and Innovation
The Governor General will host a round-table discussion on the role of learning and innovation in strengthening ties between peoples, institutions and nations. He will be joined by the President, as well as participants from Canada and Chile.
