Media Advisory: Governor General to Honour Laureates of the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards...

...and to Hold a Discussion with First Nations, Métis and Inuit Women on the Occasion of International Women's Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 6, 2008) - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will be in Toronto on March 7 and 8, 2008, to honour 14 laureates of the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards (NAAA) and to take part in a discussion on International Women's Day.

During the visit, Her Excellency will deliver a speech at the 15th annual NAAA Gala Event to be held at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (1 Front Street East), on Friday, March 7, 2008, at 8 p.m. This gala showcases the outstanding accomplishments of individuals in the fields of health, law, political science, culture, arts and others.

On International Women's Day, the Governor General will take part in a round table discussion with 50 First Nations, Metis and Inuit women from across the country and from various walks of life. The discussion will touch on challenges and success stories experienced by Aboriginal women, and will take place at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto (16 Spadina Road), on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 11 a.m. Members of the media will be able to cover the opening remarks from the Governor General. As for the discussion, it will be closed to media.
