Media Advisory: Governor General Hosts Youth Dialogue on Women Shaping Democracy on the Occasion of International Women's Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 26, 2009) - To mark International Women's Day, Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will welcome over 100 youth from across Canada for a Youth Dialogue entitled "What about us? Women and girls changing the shape of democracy". The discussion will take place on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Ballroom at Rideau Hall.

In collaboration with Status of Women Canada and nonprofit organization Equal Voice, the dialogue will provide an unprecedented opportunity for students to interact with Canadian public leaders. They will be able to share their ideas on ways to increase youth participation in the democratic process, particularly among teenage girls and young women. The discussion will be moderated by Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) host of "Beyond Politics" Catherine Clark.

Canadians across the country can also take part in the online forum on the theme "What should be done to encourage more young women to be involved in democratic life?". Watch the live webcast, in partnership with CPAC, of the March 3 Youth Dialogue at

About the Governor General's Youth Program

Having made youth one of the main priorities of her mandate, the Governor General inaugurated, in 2007, the Youth Dialogues series, providing young Canadians with a space to voice their opinions on social transformation, and to pursue this dialogue on the Citizen Voices Web site. Her Excellency shares the ideas and perspectives presented during the dialogues with decision makers. Past Youth Dialogues have covered themes such as the elimination of racial discrimination, youth involvement in the democratic process, and the historic inauguration of US President Barack H. Obama.
