OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 15, 2014) - His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, will visit the City of Québec on Friday, October 17, 2014, to take part in a conference on the 150th anniversary of the Québec Conference and to unveil a statue in memory of General the Right Honourable Georges P. Vanier, 19th governor general of Canada, as part of the festivities surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Royal 22e Régiment (R22eR).

At 11 a.m., the Governor General will deliver remarks at the event, The Quebec Conference, 1864: 150 years later, focusing on the importance of this constitutional conference in Canadian history, and its relevance in Quebec and Canada today. This conference will take place at the Musée de la civilisation (85 Dalhousie Street) and will give participants the opportunity to discuss and share ideas in order to better understand the emergence of Canadian Confederation. It is being organized by the faculty of law at the Université Laval and the Université du Québec à Montréal's Groupe de recherche sur les sociétés plurinationales, in collaboration with the Quebec government's Secrétariat aux affaires intergouvernementales canadiennes. The first French-Canadian governor general (1959-1967) and an officer of the R22eR, General Vanier served Canada his entire life through his military and public service careers. He was a Canadian war hero and a great philanthropist whose altruism and dedication continue to inspire R22eR members today.
