Media Advisory: Governor General to Serve as Witness to Survivors' Accounts of Indian Residential Schools Legacy

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2009) - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will host a ceremony at Rideau Hall that will focus on the history and legacy of the Indian Residential Schools, on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at 1:00 p.m.

Upon the request of the chair and commissioners of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the Governor General accepted to be the honorary witness to this event. Survivors and their families, the chair and commissioners of the TRC, Aboriginal leaders and other dignitaries will be in attendance.

As a component of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, the TRC is an independent body that will oversee a process that will provide former students and anyone affected by the Indian Residential Schools legacy with an opportunity to share their individual experiences in a safe and culturally appropriate manner.
