Media Advisory: Governor General Talks Urban Arts with Vancouver Youth

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 22, 2008) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond will be at Centre A in Vancouver on January 24, at 7:00 p.m., to explore the ways in which youth in Vancouver are using the urban arts to combat youth crime, gang violence and improve their neighbourhoods.

The event is part of a national tour to encourage young Canadians from disenfranchised neighbourhoods in a dialogue to consider how they can use art to bring about change in their communities. The Governor General will participate in her eighth community forum on youth and the urban arts, two of which took place on foreign soil. The date marks the first anniversary since the beginning of the tour on January 25, 2007, in Calgary.

The discussion will include approximately 125 young artists representing various neighbourhoods and organisations from the Greater Vancouver Area, as well as decision makers, Order of Canada recipients and philanthropists.

Mr. Wes William (Maestro Fresh Wes), considered by many to be the father of Canadian hip hop, will be speaking at the event and will help the first anniversary. Live performances by local artists will open and close the discussion.

Media who wish to cover this event are asked to arrive between 6:15 and 6:45 p.m.
