Media Advisory: Governor General to Undertake Official Visit to Nova Scotia

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 25, 2011) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will conduct an official visit to Nova Scotia from May 31 to June 2, 2011.

"My wife, Sharon, and I are excited about our official visit to Nova Scotia, which will allow us to learn about the innovative research and environmental projects being developed by government and academic institutions," said His Excellency. "We are also looking forward to meeting with Membertou First Nation community members and experience, first-hand, how the five First Nations in Cape Breton have formed a unique economic partnership and established a collaborative approach to economic development that is becoming recognized across Canada."

Upon their arrival in Halifax, Their Excellencies will meet with the Lieutenant Governor and the Premier of the province, as well as with the Mayor and members of city council. While in the capital city, the Governor General will meet with scientists from the National Research Council's Marine Research Station who are involved in the algal biofuels program. His Excellency will also present the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award to young Canadians for their exemplary community service.

Their Excellencies will also travel to Dartmouth to visit the Nova Scotia Community College's Centre for the Built Environment: to Glace Bay, where they will participate in a Habitat for Humanity building project; and to Membertou, where they will meet with First Nation community members.

The detailed itinerary for this visit will be published at a later date.
