Media Advisory: Governor General to Visit Montreal

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 22, 2011) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will be in Montréal on Thursday, March 24, 2011.

During the visit, His Excellency will deliver the opening address at the annual conference of McGill University's Institute for the Study of Canada (MISC). The conference, entitled Canada and the United States: Conversations & Relations, will include a series of exchanges between Canadian and American counterparts on issues relating to the Canada–U.S. relationship.

In addition, the Governor General will meet with the Mayor of Montréal, Mr. Gérald Tremblay, and visit the Canadian Grenadier Guards.

Upon his arrival at City Hall, the Governor General will be greeted by the Mayor of Montréal. His Excellency will sign the City's official book prior to the meeting.

Opening Address at the Annual Conference of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada
At 4:15 p.m., the Governor General will deliver the conference's opening address.
His Excellency will speak on the importance of strengthening learning and innovation to build a smart and caring nation, in preparation for the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 2017. The event will be broadcast live by McGill University and available via www.gg.ca.
 
Since 1995, the MISC has hosted annual conferences designed to foster informed, non-partisan discussions on topics of special interest, ranging from Québec-Canada relations, Aboriginal issues, citizenship, and health care reform, to media convergence and Canada's place in the world. These large-scale public events are designed to raise questions and encourage open and objective discussion on current policy issues, bringing together hundreds of people. Visit with Canadian Grenadier Guards
As colonel of the regiment, His Excellency will conduct an inspection of the quarter guard. The Governor General, along with his wife, Her Excellency Sharon Johnston, will then tour the regiment's museum, visit the Junior Ranks', Sergeants' and Officers' messes. The Governor General will conclude his visit with an address to cadets, Guard members and veterans.
