Media Advisory: Governor General to Undertake Official Visit to the Province of British Columbia

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 22, 2011) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will conduct an official visit to the province of British Columbia, from September 26 to 28, 2011.

"Sharon and I will be visiting Canada's westernmost province—with its Latin motto Splendor sine occasu, meaning "Splendour without Diminishment"—as we continue to meet Canadians from across this fine country," said His Excellency. "We look forward to learning about the way of life in British Columbia, to understand the issues that matter most to its citizens, and how we can fuse the best of each province and territory to build a smarter and more caring nation for all."

The official visit will begin in the capital city of Victoria, where Their Excellencies will meet with British Columbians from various backgrounds and spend time with the members of the Royal Canadian Navy and their families. Their Excellencies will also meet with First Nations leaders and community members to hear their success stories, and to talk about initiatives currently underway in their communities and the work they are doing to help Aboriginal youth achieve success in post-secondary education.

The official visit will also include stops at various points on Vancouver Island. As patrons of the Trans Canada Trail, Their Excellencies will visit the newly rehabilitated Kinsol Trestle, along the Cowichan Valley Trail. They will also visit the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre to see the innovative scientific research being conducted in the area of marine and coastal-oriented field operations on the west coast.

Their Excellencies will spend the last day of their official visit in Vancouver, where His Excellency will deliver a keynote address before the Canadian Club of Vancouver. Their Excellencies will also spend time with Vancouverites and hear about the city's innovative programs for youth and families, and its initiatives as one of Canada's greenest cities. Furthermore, Her Excellency Sharon Johnston will visit the Aboriginal Mother Centre Society, where she will meet with mothers who benefit from the services provided by the centre.

The detailed itinerary for this visit will be published at a later date.
