Media Advisory: Governor General's Regional Visit to Montreal

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 23, 2007) - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will be in Montreal on August 24 and 25, 2007 to explore the ways in which youth in Montreal are using the urban arts to combat youth crime and improve their neighbourhoods.

Discussion with Bordeaux Prison's Souverains Anonymes

The Governor General will participate in a discussion with current and former inmates who participate in the Souverains Anonymes radio program at Bordeaux Prison. The discussion will centre on the challenges faced by inmates and the ways in which they are using arts, radio and new media to express their aspirations and visions.

Urban Art Discussion with Montreal Youth

As part of her national tour to engage young artists from disenfranchised neighbourhoods in a dialogue on how to use art to bring about change in their communities, the Governor General will participate in her fourth community forum on youth and the urban arts. The discussion will include approximately 80 young artists from Montreal Nord, Saint-Michel, Parc-Extension, Little Burgundy, Notre-Dame-de-Grace, Cote-des-neiges, Riviere des prairies, and Pierrefonds, multilingual and multicultural hip hop group Nomadic Massive, as well as public officials.

Saint-Michel FALLA 2007

Following a private discussion with different youth organizations from Saint-Michel, the Governor General will participate in the setting ablaze of Noemie's Ark, an 11-metre-high sculpture, as per deep-seated traditions of the Fallas.
