Media Advisory: GTA hospitality workers express outrage over City of Toronto's treatment of its employees

Good jobs are worth protecting!

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 2, 2012) - Members of UNITE HERE Local 75 (the hotel, hospitality and food service workers union in the GTA) will gather in front of Toronto City Hall to advocate for a city with top-notch services and a decent standard of living for city employees.

Food service workers will share their personal stories and what it is like to live in Rob Ford's subcontracted Toronto. Local 75 members will join CUPE members in a media conference to talk about the importance of raising the living standard for everyone. Lowering the workers' standard of living is not the answer. Many of UNITE HERE Local 75 members know what it is like to work in low wage jobs with no benefits and no job security. Food service workers are fighting to create better jobs in their own workplaces. Gutting public services and good jobs will not benefit these already disadvantaged workers and may eventually turn the few good jobs we have in this city into ones with no security and dignity.

Date: Friday, February 3, 2012
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Location: Nathan Phillips Square
100 Queen Street West, outside Toronto City Hall
Speakers will include:
• CUPE 416 and CUPE 79 members
• UNITE HERE Local 75 food service workers
