Media Advisory: Hamilton and Haldimand-Norfolk communities unite to stop cuts at Children's Aid Society-rally on Friday in Hamilton

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 6, 2013) - Determined to stop funding cuts at local Children's Aid Societies (CASs) that will hurt at-risk children and youth, concerned Hamilton and Haldimand-Norfolk community members, including foster parents, local activists and residents, a former crown ward and local CAS workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will stage a rally in front of City Hall on Friday, June 7 in Hamilton, to highlight the negative impact of a $10.4 million funding cut in CASs in Hamilton and Haldimand-Norfolk.

"We are united to send a strong message to the Liberal government and, especially, to Minister Teresa Piruzza - to restore the cuts so we can adequately serve at-risk children and youth so their families and their future can remain intact," said Theresa Flynn, president of CUPE Local 3042 at the Hamilton CAS. "Our children and youth's future is at risk and we are here to fight for them-after all, they are the future of our community."

Front-line CAS workers and supporters are coming together to express their deep concerns over the new funding formula introduced by the Liberal government which will see reduction in CAS funding of $50.6 million across the province. In Hamilton and Haldimand-Norfolk, the CAS agencies have seen $10.4 million in funding cuts, leading to the layoff of 98 staff, program closures, and a reduction in services designed to help at-risk children and youth.

CUPE represents over 724 front-line CAS workers, including child protection and child and youth care workers, office, clerical and support staff in Hamilton and Haldimand-Norfolk County, from CUPE Locals 3042 and 3899 from Children's Aid Society of Hamilton, CUPE Local 1766 from the Catholic Children's Aid Society of Hamilton and CUPE Local 1797 from the Children's Aid Society of Haldimand-Norfolk.
