Media Advisory: Hand-mirror protest planned for Legislature at 1pm Today

Ordinary Albertans will descend on Legislature with hand mirrors as a real-life extension of social media's #PrenticeBlamesAlbertans protest

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - March 7, 2015) - Hundreds of ordinary Albertans will descend on the Legislature on Saturday, March 7, to engage in a "hand-mirror rally" to protest Premier Jim Prentice's attempts to blame Albertans for the province's budget mess.

The rally is a natural and spontaneous outgrowth of the social media firestorm ignited by Prentice's controversial comment that "Albertans need to look in the mirror" if they want to know who's responsible for the provincial government's huge budget shortfall.

The Alberta Federation of Labour, one of the partners in the new Better Way Alberta campaign, is helping organize the rally, but the idea for the event came from the social media outrage generated by Prentice's comments.

What: Rally - Hand Mirror Rally at the Leg: Tell the Tories to Look in the Mirror

When: 1 p.m. March 9 (TODAY)

Where: Steps of the Alberta Legislature

"It started with one solitary tweet from an Edmonton photographer who suggested that people bring hand mirrors to the Legislature, so we could show the Tories who's really responsible for our province's budget mess," says Alberta Federation of Labour president Gil McGowan. "The tweet just took off. We thought it was a great idea, so we've been helping to get the word out. We're asking everyone who's interested to grab their mirrors, join us at the Legislature and help send a message to the Tories that they need to look in the mirror."
