OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 28, 2013) - Hassan Yussuff, Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress, will attend a Labour Day parade in Toronto on Monday, September 2. The event is sponsored by the Toronto and York District Labour Council. Yussuff will be available for comments to the media.
Canadian workers have celebrated their achievements on this day since it was declared a national holiday in 1894. The focus this year is on how unions stand up for fairness on behalf of their members and all Canadians. CLC researchers have found that on average unionized workers in Toronto earn $4.36 an hour more than do non-union employees. In Ontario, the differential is $6.11 an hour.
Yussuff says that many of the things first won by unions are enjoyed by all workers today, including fair wages, overtime pay, pensions, workplace safety standards, parental leave, vacation pay and protection from discrimination and harassment.
