Media Advisory: Hundreds to Rally at Toronto City Hall Against Fluoride in Drinking Water

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 21, 2013) - Hundreds of Torontonians plan to peacefully assemble at City Hall today Saturday, September 21st, 2013 from 1-5pm to end water fluoridation in Toronto.

More than 450 people have confirmed their attendance on the Facebook page and more than 1,600 have signed the online petition.

A chemical called Hydrofluorosilicic Acid is currently being used to fluoridate Toronto's public water supply. This is a toxic waste by-product of phosphate fertilizer production that has been shown to contain arsenic, mercury and radioactive substances. It has also been shown to leach lead from pipes into the water supply.

Peer reviewed scientific literature demonstrates that drinking artificially fluoridated water can have serious and detrimental effects on the body and brain. For example, exposure to artificially fluoridated water has been associated with an increased risk of osteosarcoma in boys (Bassin, 2006, Cohn, 1992; NCI, 1990). Additionally, recent research shows that consuming fluoridated water may significantly lower IQ (Choi, Sun, Zhang & Grandjean, 2012; Ding et al., 2011).

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) acknowledges that the benefits of fluoride are mainly topical, not systemic (CDC, 1999; 2001). Furthermore, the largest U.S. study of dental decay found no significant difference between those consuming fluoridated and non-fluoridated water (Brunelle & Carlos, 1990).

Today concerned citizens of Toronto will gather to send a peaceful and powerful message: they do not want this unnecessary and harmful chemical added to Toronto's water supply any longer.
