Media Advisory: Hundreds with developmental disabilities without services in Hamilton

Families, support workers say better funding needed to stabilize supports

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 27, 2011) - An ageing and growing population, an influx of people with developmental disabilities from other areas and stagnant provincial funding is resulting in increasing waitlists for services and supports for adults with a developmental disability in Hamilton, say area parents and direct support workers at Hamilton Community Living. They are concerned that, since the mid-90s, when budgets for community-based supports for those with developmental disabilities and their families were flatlined by the then Conservative government, services have not kept pace with the growing need for residential and day supports in Hamilton.

Together, they will be holding a media conference on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 – 11:00 a.m. at 1130 Barton Street East, Suite 212, Hamilton, to give an overview of the challenges faced by area families in accessing services locally.

"There are many families in our area desperate for any measure of support. I am 70. My son has some supports, but there are many ageing parents and family members in our community who are very concerned about how their son or daughter will be supported in the community should they die. That's the reality of underfunding. Regardless of who is elected in October, the province must provide the necessary funding to stabilize existing services while increasing access to supports to the most vulnerable before families spiral into crisis," says Naresh Agarwal whose 44-year-old son, Akhil, receives some services through Community Living Hamilton.

Agarwal will be joined at the media conference Tuesday by 75-year-old Janet Downer whose 43-year-old daughter, Marianne, with Down's Syndrome requires both residential and community supports, and Karen Almas, an instructor worker with Community Living Hamilton.
