Media Advisory: Itinerary for the Governor General's First Official Visit to New Brunswick, May 14 to 18, 2007

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 7, 2007) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Jean-Daniel Lafond will conduct their first official visit to New Brunswick from May 14 to 18, 2007.

During their five-day visit to the province, Their Excellencies will focus their activities around the arts and culture, La Francophonie, fisheries and community life in New Brunswick. The tour will include stops in Fredericton, Caraquet, Bathurst, Shippagan and Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gagetown.

This will be the 12th official provincial/territorial visit for the Governor General since being sworn into office.

The detailed itinerary is attached. The schedule is subject to change.

Monday, May 14 - Fredericton

2 p.m.
The Governor General - Visit to Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gagetown

The Governor General will visit CFB Gagetown and will attend a
reception with families of deployed Canadian Forces members at the
Military Family Resource Centre

Visit to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery

Their Excellencies will go on a private tour of the Beaverbrook Art
Gallery, led by Bernard Riordon, O.C., director general of the
Gallery.

Tuesday, May 15 - Fredericton

Official Welcoming Ceremony

Their Excellencies will be greeted by the Honourable Shawn Graham,
Premier of New Brunswick, and Mrs. Roxanne Reeves. The welcoming
ceremony will include a review of a guard of honour and a 21-gun
salute.

Wednesday, May 16 - Fredericton/Bathurst

The Governor General - Discussion with practitioners in the field of
prevention of family violence and violence against women

The Governor General will meet with representatives from 22 regional
networks to discuss the prevention of family violence and violence
against women. The Honourable Carmel Robichaud, Minister of Family
and Community Services and Minister responsible for the Status of
Women, will also participate in the discussion.

Jean-Daniel Lafond - Art Matters discussion with artists

The Governor General's arts awards ceremonies offer an opportunity to
bring together our country's artistic and cultural creative spirits.
Created to complement the ceremonies, the Art Matters forums
encourage dialogue and provide a space for reflection on the creative
process and how it is received by society. Similar discussions have
also taken place across Canada as part of the Governor General's
official visits to the provinces and territories. These conversations
delve beyond politics and funding, and create a vantage point from
which to observe a culture in motion.

Their Excellencies will be greeted by His Worship Stephen Brunet,
Mayor of Bathurst, and will take a walking tour of the waterfront.
Their Excellencies will also plant a commemorative tree. Members of
the community are invited to meet Their Excellencies during the
walking tour.

Thursday, May 17 - Caraquet/Shippagan

9 a.m.
Visit with lobster fishermen

Accompanied by Coast Guard officials, Their Excellencies will visit
four trawlers in the waters between Caraquet and Shippagan to meet
lobster fishermen. His Worship Antoine Landry, Mayor of Caraquet,
will join Their Excellencies on this trip.

Arrival in Shippagan

Their Excellencies will be greeted by His Worship Jonathan Roch Noel,
Mayor of Shippagan, as they return from their sea tour. The Governor
General and Jean-Daniel Lafond will meet with snow crab fishermen and
will participate in a community event on the docks.

Their Excellencies will walk to the Shippagan campus of the
Universite de Moncton and will be greeted by campus dean Jocelyne
