FREEDOM DAY

September 20, 2010, 12 noon-1:30 pm

Legislative Lawn, Queen's Park

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 14, 2010) - Hundreds of high school students from across the Greater Toronto Area plan to celebrate Freedom and Human Rights at FREEDOM DAY. Presented by Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, the event will celebrate Simon Wiesenthal's passion for human rights and social justice.

FREEDOM DAY will be hosted by Ben Mulroney and includes the following speakers and performers:

  • Aliya Jasmine Sovani, MTV Host & Producer
  • Danny Lawn and Melanie Mah, "So You Think You Can Dance Canada" (CTV Television)
  • Spider Jones, journalist and talk radio host
  • Avi Benlolo, President and CEO, FSWC and leading Canadian Human Rights activist
  • Max Eisen, Holocaust survivor
  • Linda Frum, Senator
  • Marina Nemat, Author and survivor of Iran's infamous Evin prison
  • Marlowe Stone, Toronto Musician
  • Mike Prosserman, UNITYCHARITY (Hip Hop Away from Violence)
  • GTA Students, addressing human rights in Afghanistan, North Korea and Congo 

 FREEDOM DAY MISSION:

  • To motivate today's youth to carry on the legacy of Simon Wiesenthal, whose mission was to promote respect, justice and human rights (September 20th marks the date of his death)
  • To motivate youth to speak out against injustice and counter hatred with acts of peace and understanding
  • To encourage youth to recognize the power they have to effect positive change, collectively and individually, in their own lives, schools, homes & communities, on a national and global scale
