MEDIA ADVISORY: KAIROS Tar Sands Delegation Meets Fort McMurray Community and Industry

FORT MCMURRAY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 25, 2009) -

Attention: Environment, Business, Religion, and Aboriginal Issues Journalists

WHO: KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives delegation of Canadian church leaders, Indigenous and Southern partners.

WHAT: A community event with church leaders, Indigenous partners and Oil Watch International partners from Nigeria and Ecuador to discuss the impact of oil sands exploration on our lives and the environment. Fort McMurray church ministers will facilitate this ecumenical event.

During the day the delegation will tour Suncor's mining facility, meet with the Oil Sands Developers Group, the Christian Labour Association of Canada and with Mayor Melissa Blake.

WHERE: St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, 484 Signal Road, Fort McMurray

WHEN: May 25, 7 pm - 9:30 pm

WHY: To explore the theological, social and ethical implications of fossil fuel extraction in the Athabasca tar sands. To listen, discuss and learn more about the Alberta tar sands projects and their impacts on all involved communities: society at large, workers, Indigenous peoples and communities, and the environment.

These activities are all part of the KAIROS delegation to Northern Alberta tar sands and affected communities. The delegation's weeklong tour includes meetings with church and community members, Indigenous peoples, civil society groups, government and industry representatives in Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan.
