MEDIA ADVISORY: Leading Children's Rights Groups Join UNICEF Canada's Nigel Fisher to Call on Government of Canada to Take Action on Violence on National Child Day-Monday, November 20th

Nigel Fisher, President & CEO of UNICEF Canada, Gordon Phaneuf, Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Child Welfare League of Canada and Ethan McGrath, youth representative from the Canadian Council of Provincial Child and Youth Advocates, join forces on November 20th - National Child Day - to release two significant reports on violence against children and to call on the Government of Canada to establish a comprehensive national plan to protect and support children.



WHEN: Monday, November 20, 2006

WHAT: 1. The release of the UN Secretary General's World Report on
Violence Against Children.
2. The release of Seen, Heard and Believed: What Youth Say About
Violence.
3. A call to action the Government of Canada to act upon the World
Report's recommendations.

WHO: Nigel Fisher. Mr. Fisher, recipient of Canada's Meritorious
Service Cross, has twice served in the capacity of Assistant
Secretary-General of the United Nations. He has worked with UNICEF
for more than 20 years and led UNICEF's emergency operations in
the Great Lakes region of Africa after the Rwandan genocide. He
has published in the areas of child trauma recovery, child rights
and protection.

Gordon Phaneuf. Mr. Phaneuf has had a long affiliation with
children's issues working in a variety of capacities, including
front-line child protection, program development, policy analysis,
knowledge development and epidemiology of child maltreatment. He
established the Child Maltreatment Division within Health Canada.

Ethan McGrath. Ethan is a Grade 10 student from Toronto
representing the Canadian Council of Provincial Child and Youth
Advocates, who was a key participant in the development of the
youth voices report.
