Media Advisory: London and District Labour Council Organizes Forum on the Dramatic Changes to Employment Insurance and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in Controversial Bill C-38

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 13, 2012) - The London and District Labour Council and the Canadian Labour Congress have organized a forum for labour and community activists on the dramatic changes to EI and the TFWP in Bill C-38.

Date: June 14
Time: 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Location: 380 Adelaide St. Tolpuddle Co-operative

"The changes to EI and the TFWP will drive down wages for all workers and are a glaring example of the overall agenda of the Harper Government to attack the labour and social gains won over decades," states Patti Dalton President of the London and District Labour Council. "These changes are encompassed in the Omnibus Bill C-38 which has been widely criticized for the sweeping overhaul of Canadian legislation that amends or axes over 60 federal statutes, and for the lack of democratic process the federal government is using to implement multiple changes that will have far reaching negative consequences".

Regarding the changes to the Employment Insurance Program, Chris Macdonald, the Canadian Labour Congress Ontario Director, says that: "The Harper Government is clearly not focused on the creation of jobs but is more intent on limiting the very programs that unemployed workers require".

The controversial Omnibus Bill has sparked grassroots mobilization all across Canada and there will be a local protest on June 13, 5:30 p.m. at MP Susan Truppe's office, at which Patti Dalton and Chris Macdonald will speak.

The EI and TWFP Forum on June 14 will have over 50 local labour and community activists participating and will feature speakers Karl Flecker, CLC Human Rights and Anti-racism Director; Stan Raper, UFCW National Director for Migrant Workers issues; and Pam Frache, OFL Education Director.
