Media Advisory: March 10th to 16th, 2008 Is International Brain Awareness Week

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 5, 2008) - Brain Awareness Week will take place from March 10th to March 16th, 2008. Neuroscientists and organizations dedicated to neuroscience research around the world will be organizing activities to advance public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research.

Here in Canada, Society for Neuroscience chapters have arranged for graduate students to visit hundreds of local elementary and high schools to talk about the brain and the field of neuroscience. Additionally, prominent researchers will host public lectures at universities and research hospitals on topics ranging from aging, therapeutic approaches to brain diseases, to brain fitness and memory loss.

NeuroScience Canada, a national non-profit organization that develops and supports multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research across the neurosciences, will partner with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Dr. Dave Williams to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the space shuttle Neurolab. This flight was dedicated to the advancement of neuroscience research and focused on the effects of microgravity on the brain. Dr. Williams will speak at McMaster University, University of Toronto and at his former high school, Beaconsfield High, to raise awareness about the important research that can be accomplished on a space shuttle mission, while highlighting neuroscience research and its relevance to all Canadians.
