Media Advisory: Media Invited to Participate in Overseas Events Marking the 95th Anniversary of the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 27, 2011) - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, will lead an official delegation to France to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel. Commemorative events will take place from June 30 to July 3, 2011.

Media interested in accompanying the delegation must contact Veterans Affairs Canada at the number below by June 8, 2011.Spaces are limited. Transportation and accommodation expenses will be covered by Veterans Affairs Canada. For those outlets with pay policies, these expenses are estimated to be approximately $1,900 per person. The invitation to be an official media delegate is open to mainstream media who satisfy the following:

Essential Criteria – Successful media must:

  • have a circulation of or reach at least 100,000; and

  • commit to filing regular articles and stories back to Canada.

Additional Criteria – Successful media must:

  • have reports widely published in both English and French; OR

  • be a major regional newspaper outlet with larger network membership or affiliation; OR

  • be a Canadian radio outlet with Broadcast News feed; OR

  • be a major television network.

Asset Criteria – Preference will be given to media who:

  • have reported on Veteran or commemorative issues in the past;

  • are capable of publishing in multiple formats (i.e. print, broadcast, Web, etc.); and

  • target youth as an audience.

The delegation will attend private wreath layings at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, the Adanac Cemetery and the Gueudecourt Newfoundland Memorial, and Government of Canada signature events at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial and the Courcelette Memorial.
