Media Advisory: Media Opportunities During Recovery of WWII Nomad Aircraft from Lake Muskoka


OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 24, 2014) - National Defence

Media are invited to cover the recovery operations of a WWII Northrop Nomad aircraft in Lake Muskoka, which is taking place between October 25 and November 3, 2014.

What: The Royal Canadian Air Force will lead the recovery operation of the Nomad aircraft, which crashed in Lake Muskoka in 1940.

Where: Bracebridge, Ontario, will serve as the primary staging location for the operation. Imagery from the operation, including underwater video, will be available daily at www.forcesimages.ca.

When: Specific media opportunities have been arranged to include:

  • Monday 27 Oct: A technical briefing will be held for media to outline the recovery operation.
  • Tuesday 28 Oct: Two pieces of the wreckage are expected to be brought to the surface. Media will be brought by boat to the recovery site to observe the operations and salvage of those pieces. Possible interview opportunity Commanding Officer of the Fleet Diving Unit. NOTE - there will be space limitations and a media pool may be required, depending on interest.
  • Wednesday 29 Oct: Media availability at Pride of Muskoka in Bracebridge, Ont, where the pieces recovered the previous day will be moved ashore.
  • Sunday 2 Nov: Media availability at Pride of Muskoka in Bracebridge, Ont, where the main fuselage of the aircraft will be moved ashore.
  • Monday 3 Nov: The recovered ensemble of the Nomad wreckage will be displayed on a flatbed trailer prior to being transported to the National Air Force Museum of Canada in Trenton, Ont. A small ceremony will mark the end of the recovery operation and handover of the Nomad from the RCAF to the National Air Force Museum of Canada. Partners and special contributors will be acknowledged at this time.
