Media Advisory: Minister Clement to Participate in Live Judging Event to Select Winner of CODE Appathon

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 27, 2014) - The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, will join fellow judges Robert Herjavec, Chief Executive Officer of The Herjavec Group; Mark Barrenechea, President & CEO of OpenText; Gerri Sinclair, Corporate Director and Strategic Innovation Consultant, as well as head (Principal) of The Gerri Sinclair Group; and Dr. Mohamed Lachemi, Provost and Vice President Academic, Ryerson University, in selecting the winner of the CODE appathon at the Grand Finale event.

CODE saw over 900 participants from across the country compete to create an unprecedented 110 submissions using federal government data sets.

The 15 finalists will be at the CODE Grand Finale, where they will pitch their apps during a live judging event to a panel of experts and potential investors. The three best apps, as determined by the judges, and the Fan Favorite, will be awarded great prizes, including the top prize of $25,000.

"I am pleased to see students and tech enthusiasts putting Canada at the forefront of Open Data. The apps created at CODE are just a glimpse of what can be done when data is open and accessible. I encourage everyone to vote for their favourite app to ensure these bright individuals are rewarded for their creativity and innovation." - Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board.

"Nine hundred tech students, entrepreneurs, appathon, competition, fan favourite voting and top prizes - can it get any better? Let's show the world why Canada's high tech industry is leading edge. Go Canada Go!" - Robert Herjavec, Founder and CEO, The Herjavec Group, leading cyber security firm and a Shark host on ABC's Shark Tank.

"The goal of CODE is to unlock the latent potential of Open Data and improve the lives of Canadians with apps that solve problems and increase the nation's productivity. Many of the CODE top 15 submissions have the potential to do just this. Voting on the Fan Favourite is a fun way that everyone can participate in CODE and be a part of the Open Data movement." - Ray Sharma, Founder of XMG Studio Inc, the creator of Canada's largest competitive hackathon and organizer of CODE.
