Media Advisory: Minister Verner to Attend Event Hosted by Reporters Without Borders and the IDRC at Event Featuring Afghan Women Journalists

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 20, 2006) - The Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages, will deliver opening remarks at an event featuring two Afghan women journalists who will speak about freedom of the press and the role of women in Afghanistan, today in Montreal. In her address, Minister Verner will reiterate Canada's ongoing commitment to Afghanistan, specifically Afghan women and their contribution to the reconstruction efforts in their country.

To commemorate the 17th Jailed Journalists Support Day, Reporters Without Borders Canada (RWBC) and Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) have invited Mehria Azizi, camerawoman for the NGO AINA, and Najeeba Ayubi, director of the independent press group Killid, on a five-city tour of Canada, including Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Calgary.
